Encouragement

If you need encouragement on your faith journey, allow me to share with you some resources that have been a blessing to me. These books and blogs have helped enable me to listen with more open ears and see with eyes of faith. I hope they are a support to you as well.

She Reads Truth - Women in the Word of God Every DayAs a daily devotional site, I've found this one to be highly relevant and meaningful, with a strong Biblical basis and much reading in the word as well as devotional thoughts. The website is based off a book by the same name, She Reads Truth, by Amanda Bible Williams and Raechel Myers.

Pray the Word - 90 Prayers That Touch the Heart of God, by Tiece L. King

Often we feel like praying should be the simplest thing but actually ends up being the most difficult. In her book Pray the Word, Tiece King teaches us how to pray the scripture by leading through example. Her book of daily scripture based prayers can be prayed as written or used as a springboard to our own heart prayers. Pray the Word is also available as a free downloadable app.

Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence, by Sarah Young

In this well-known book, Sarah Young has taken the scriptures and made them alive and personal. God speaks to us through His word, and these daily verses show the heart of God and offer encouragement as we walk each day. I appreciate that this is simply scripture, not interpretation, and this book has often offered me the reminder I needed to heed Jesus in His word.

Based off of her book by the same title, Ann Voskamp offers an encouraging Facebook page that my family enjoys using during our devotion times. Among her many beautiful pictures are "Count 1000 Gifts" photos for each month of the year. For each day of the month, Ann offers a challenge to be thankful for something specific - and in the process, really makes us think about the many blessings we have for which to be grateful.

For those who enjoy liturgy, this little book offers weekly devotional themes. Each week includes daily scripture passages and readings for reflection from a variety of authors. A specific format is provided for each day which includes times of prayer, a reading from the book of Psalms, scripture readings, and readings for reflections, as well as suggested hymns. One of the things I really appreciate about this book is a section that offers twelve different monthly prayer retreat models for extended times of solitude, prayer, and reflection in the Word.

Another option for those who find liturgy especially meaningful is Phyllis Tickle's 3-book set, The Divine Hours.  You can also pray the hours daily using the website Explore Faith.
